To get started you need to take a few minutes and decide what type of home filing system is best for you. Basically will it be best for you to do your filing electronically or manually?
Consider your personal records. There are advantages and disadvantages of each filing method. Ultimately the type of system you have will depend on your circumstances.
If you are just starting out in life, a simple expandable folder will be plenty. If you have just been married you may need a portable file storage bin.
If you have been married, divorced or have accumulated a lot of possessions, you may need a more robust system with a file cabinet and several drawers.
Maybe you are helping a parent get ready for retirement or estate planning.
You will also need to think of several other factors when it comes to your filing. One of the most important things is that it is workable for you and your family. Can you include all the information you (or they) will need?
An electronic filing system will consist of a folder on your computer that is designated to include all your documents.
You will create a home filing folder then you will subdivide it into four home filing categories (which will be discussed later). Each of these home filing categories will then be divided into a file for each record.
You will need a scanner to include some of the files. If you are considering this filing method be aware that many times you must have the original of a document. For instance, a scanned copy of your birth certificate will not be accepted when applying for a passport. You must have the original.
If you decide to go with the manual paper method of filing, you will need (obviously) more storage space. In addition you will need some office supplies such as file folders, labels, 3-ring binder, and other filing materials.

1. You are going to do this, and
2. How you are going to do it
