Now we will need to consider your actual home inventory list. You have some of the basic considerations taken into account in Step 1, let's start looking at what you actually have.
There are several categories that you will want to start thinking about as you look at your possessions. Download a copy of inventory categories for your home inventory.
As you can see there are many different categories that you probably have in your household. The lines between the categories may not be clear cut. For instance, you may collect rare stamps as a hobby. Since your collection may be worth some money, you could consider this in either the Hobbies or Collector's Items categories.
It does not matter how you categorize this. Just make sure that you are consistent on your home inventory list. As we move through this process, you will be cross-referencing your possessions so you will always be able to find the information of each.
Now let's take a look at the individual items you may have. Download this home inventory list for a list of items that may be included in your inventory.
Take the guess work out of doing a home inventory. Use the Easy-PIM Home Inventory System. A step by step guide will walk you through the basics. Buy it now.
Now please don't be confused, you may or may not have these items in your household. This list is just for a reference. You may also have some items in your home that are not on this list. Adjust as you need to and make the list to fit your situation.
The next thing we want to do is make a quick drawing of each room. You don't need to be an artist, but to complete your home inventory you will need do draw each room completely. We are going to use this drawing in the next step when we start actually documenting your inventory. It is best to make the drawing now while you are not distracted by looking at the details of the individual items.
Your drawing does not have to be fancy, in scale, or pretty. We just need a basic idea of what the room looks like, where the windows and doors are, and basic furniture settings.
Great! Once you have finished this step go on to Step 3 to start documenting your inventory.
