Surviving three feet of hot water in my basement
by Maven G
After working a long day, I came home and immediately knew something was wrong in the house. The minute I stepped in I noticed it smelled like the tropics with warm and humid air.
I could not find what had happened until I went into the basement. My basement was 3 feet under water. The pipe that carried the hot water to my washing machine broke and filled the basement with water.
Everything in my basement was lost. The items on the shelves, my washing and dryer as well as a hot water heater and the furnace were all under water.
My neighbors helped me turn off the electricity and I spent a very cold night in December alone in a water soaked home.
The next day the insurance inspector cam and asked me for an inventory of my loss and took photos. For the next few days I went through the contents of my basement and sent an inventory to the insurance company.
The key was my ability to provide them an inventory of items. Luckily I was able to do it since the items were there. I also took photos as I created an inventory in case I was going to be questioned about the items I claimed. I believe this inventory with photos made my claim go without complications.
Although I received a reasonable payment covering the contents, it would have been so much easier if I had an inventory of everything that was down there before it was damaged. I learned my lesson the hard way.
